05c – Aladdin Part 3

aladdin-the-end

In the final episode of the Aladdin Series, we pick up where we left off in episode 5b, with Disney’s Aladdin trying to repair the damage of his first attempt to court Princess Jasmine, and Aladdin from the “One Thousand and One Nights” sabotaging Princess Badr Al-Badur’s marriage to the son of the Sultan’s grand vizier.  There is plenty of excitement left in this near two-hour series finale. 05b – Aladdin Part 2

disney-graphics-aladdin-039326

In our last episode, we left both Disney’s Aladdin and Shahdazad’s Aladdin sealed within a deep treasure trove. Disney called it The Cave of Wonders, and in the One Thousand and One Nights it is the Cave of Treasure.

To all appearances, that should’ve been the end of the story and there shouldn’t have been anything left to say about Aladdin. And if only the greedy and anxious villains in both Disney’s and Shahadazad’s stories, had been a little more even-tempered and patient, and helped Aladdin out of the cave, it would have been.

05a – Aladdin Part 1

The story of Aladdin is one of the most familiar narratives in all of literature, a classic ‘rags to riches’ tale featuring a young hero who has to learn an important lesson; an exotic setting; a good healthy dose of magic; a beautiful heroine; and an evil villain (or two, depending on which version of the story you follow). I discuss the origins of Mushu, Li Shang and what makes Chi Fu such a misognyst. I talk about how Disney’s Mulan and Mulan from the legends approaches, trains for and wages war, and how she handles the various romantic angles or lack thereof. This one was a lot of fun to work on. Enjoy! :D [Read more…]

04a – Mulan Part 1

mulan-disney-princess-reflection

The story of Mulan is one of the most mundane of all Chinese folktales. In Ancient China, with folklore rife with magic, Gods, Demons, Dragons and all kinds of supernatural influences, it was the plausibility of Mulan that made it such a compelling story.

Though her story has changed through the centuries, its core elements remain constant.

A young girl’s elderly and sickly father is called up in the draft. He is too old, and ill to go off to fight, but they have no alternative. The father must go to war. Mulan decides to serve in his place. To do so, she will need to disguise herself as a man.

This episode discusses the differences between Dinsey’s Mulan, and the Mulan from the varied Chinese legends.
