04b – Mulan Part 2

500full

We start where we left of in Episode 4a – Mulan Part 1, Mulan has joined the army. How does Mulan from the old tales prevent being discovered to be a woman? I discuss the origins of Mushu, Li Shang and what makes Chi Fu such a misognyst. I talk about how Disney’s Mulan and Mulan from the legends approaches, trains for and wages war, and how she handles the various romantic angles or lack thereof. This one was a lot of fun to work on. Enjoy! :D

Help Disney Story Origins

DSO-introduction-slideshow-aThe computer I use to edit the Disney Story Origins Podcast (my one and only home computer) is on it’s deathbed. It’s been limping along for awhile now and I have asked a lot of it in it’s old age.

It has been suffering from a series of software crashes, power-losses and generally poor performance. I took it to some specialists, and talked to some friends who know about this stuff, and each new opinion I get says the same thing.

The PC is old (Dell XPS 630i) and theoretically it has been pushed hard by my processing demands (editing DSO, DLRage and general uses like gaming and stuff). It has so many hardware issues that the thing to do is to replace it.

I have looked over some computer options, and a machine that meets my needs is expensive, and I simply cannot afford it. A friend suggested I come to GoFundMe and ask my listeners for help.

The money you donate would be used STRICTLY for the podcast: a computer that can support high-end audio production and some upgraded recording eequipmentand software.

I hate asking, but this is really the only course that makes sense. The computer is not dead yet, but when it goes, I can’t say with ccertaintyif the DSO Podcast will survive this hit. I can say with certainty that without your help, it will be a very long time before the next episode.

This is my personal, family computer, so it’s not just me who will suffer. My iPhone will be the only way we can use the internet, I won’t be able to write (for a living or for the podcast), or edit or pretty much anything, and if I wasn’t feeling very desperate at this moment, I wouldn’t be asking. I’d be writing. :)

I would be SO grateful for any donations, any little bit would help. Thank you very much for taking the time.

04a – Mulan Part 1

mulan-disney-princess-reflection

The story of Mulan is one of the most mundane of all Chinese folktales. In Ancient China, with folklore rife with magic, Gods, Demons, Dragons and all kinds of supernatural influences, it was the plausibility of Mulan that made it such a compelling story.

Though her story has changed through the centuries, its core elements remain constant.

A young girl’s elderly and sickly father is called up in the draft. He is too old, and ill to go off to fight, but they have no alternative. The father must go to war. Mulan decides to serve in his place. To do so, she will need to disguise herself as a man.

This episode discusses the differences between Dinsey’s Mulan, and the Mulan from the varied Chinese legends.

Episode 4 – Mulan – On Hold

025aUpdate: My 20 month old son, Lincoln, has come down with RSV; a highly contagious respiratory virus and we had to take him out of daycare until he recovers. Before the age of three, this can be a very dangerous illness for a child so we’re taking it very seriously.

As long as he is not in daycare I will be looking after him, so I won’t be doing much work on Episode 4, and there is still so much that needs to be done. The good news is that his case isn’t extreme, but I can’t say when he’ll be over it.

I’m sorry that episode 4 is taking so long, but this was a big episode to begin with and life has gotten in the way.

Thank you all for your patience with me. ~Paul

Casting Call for Episode 4 the Voice of Hua Mulan CLOSED

hua_mulan_by_jae462-d3b241q

The open casting call for Episode 4 has been closed, and no more submissions will be accepted at this time. However, do stay tuned for other opportunities to voice a Disney/Mythological/Historical character in the future. I know it all happened very quick, and next time I will have deadlines issued and I will be more organized. I’m kind of learning how to do this as I go. Thank you very much for taking the time.
